Load-Shedding Prep: Electrical Checklist for Nepal Homes

Load-shedding prep for Nepal homes: inverter sizing, changeover safety, battery care and a room-by-room electrical checklist. SDR Kathmandu — 9801508528.

Load shedding prep electrical Nepal — home inverter battery bank and backup wiring prepared for outages in Kathmandu

Prepare the board before the schedule returns

Load-shedding does not ruin homes that are ready — it ruins homes that improvise. When the timetable tightens, families rush out for extension cords, shared inverters and temporary generator hooks, and the failures we see every cycle come from that scramble: overloaded backup boards, hot changeover joints, and batteries installed wherever there was a spare corner. Preparing early is cheaper than repairing during week one.

Start at the distribution board. Confirm MCB labels still match rooms, press the RCCB test button, and identify which ways you actually need during an outage — lights, fans, router, fridge, CCTV, gate motor — versus which must stay off backup (geyser, AC, pump, cooker). SDR Smart Design and Repair maps essential loads for homes across Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, then wires the backup path so nothing is guessed at 8pm in the dark. Call 9801508528 for a load list review.

  • Label every way; note essential vs non-essential loads
  • RCCB test button check before the season
  • Spare board capacity for a backup sub-board
  • Written room-by-room outage priority list
  • Emergency number saved: 9801508528

Inverter and battery readiness

Backup only works if the inverter was sized for the loads you actually flip on when power dies. Rebuild the list from last season: which lights, how many fans, does the fridge stay on, does the router and CCTV stay up? Add watts, allow compressor surge, and check your inverter VA still fits — families add appliances every year and never re-size the backup.

Batteries fail on neglect: low distilled water, corroded terminals, a room without ventilation, or months of shallow discharge. Before load-shedding ramps, clean terminals, check water levels (flooded tubular), confirm the battery room breathes, and load-test weak cells. Undersized or overheating battery cable is a fire risk we correct on call-outs. Sizing detail lives in /blog/home-ups-installation-nepal, with category help at /blog/ups-vs-inverter-for-home-nepal.

  • Rebuild essential-load watt list each season
  • Battery water, terminal clean, room ventilated
  • Load-test ageing batteries before peak schedules
  • Battery cable short, thick and fused at the source
  • Inverter VA ≥ essential load + surge margin

Changeover, generator and backfeed dangers

The most dangerous improvisation of load-shedding season is an informal changeover — plugging a generator lead into a wall socket with a length of cable and hope. Backfeed can energise a "dead" NEA line and injure line workers or neighbours; it also fights your inverter output if both are live at once. Use a proper changeover switch or interlocked transfer inlet so grid, inverter and generator can never parallel by accident.

Manual transfer points should be labelled GRID / GEN / OFF. Keep generator exhaust away from bedrooms, refuel only with the set cool and off, and never run leads under rugs where foot traffic cooks insulation. SDR installs lockable isolators, inlets and changeover arrangements that make the safe path the easy path — details under /services/electrical-installations and /blog/generator-installation-home-nepal.

  • No generator cable into a live wall socket — ever
  • Proper changeover or interlocked transfer inlet
  • Label GRID / GEN / OFF positions clearly
  • Exhaust outside, cool-down before refuelling
  • Inverter and generator outputs never paralleled casually

Room-by-room outage checklist

Kitchen: fridge on a clean outlet not shared with freezers on the same weak extension; decide whether the water pump runs on backup or waits (most small inverters should not start pumps); keep a charged torch near the switchboard. Living areas: identify which lighting group you actually need — two soft lights beat eight ceiling fittings draining the battery.

Work and security: router, ONT and CCTV on protected sockets so the house stays connected and recorded; UPS for the PC desk if you work nights. Bedrooms and circulation: one light path from bed to bathroom, fan priority for sleep. Exterior: gate motor, porch light and stairwell for societies — confirm they are on backup or have manual release tested. Bathrooms: geysers stay off small backup systems by design.

  • Kitchen: fridge prioritised; pump/geysers usually off backup
  • Living: minimal lighting group on the inverter way
  • Work: router, ONT, CCTV, PC UPS protected
  • Bedrooms: one path light + priority fans
  • Exterior: gate manual release tested; porch light labelled

Safety habits during outage weeks

Surges return with the power. When supply restores after hours, the grid transition can spike sensitive gear — a surge strip at the board or protected outlets for TV, fridge electronics and the CCTV rack is cheap insurance. Avoid hot-swapping battery terminals while the inverter is live, and keep liquid away from battery rooms; flooded cells can vent hydrogen in a sealed cupboard.

Candles and diyas again: open flame near temporary extension runs is how festival season and load-shedding season combine into an emergency. Prefer torches and LED lamps. If a smell of hot plastic appears, switch off at the board and call SDR — emergency handling is at /services/emergency-repairs, with night guidance in /blog/emergency-electrician-kathmandu.

  • Surge protection on electronics and CCTV rack
  • No live battery terminal work; ventilate battery room
  • LED/torch light over open flame near cables
  • Hot-plastic smell = isolate and call 9801508528
  • Keep emergency torch at the distribution board

Book load-shedding readiness with SDR

SDR Smart Design and Repair prepares Kathmandu homes for load-shedding: essential-load mapping, inverter and UPS wiring, battery-room improvements, changeover switches, surge protection and board labelling. We quote in NPR with hardware and labour separated, so you know exactly what readiness costs.

WhatsApp your board photo and last season's outage wish-list to 9801508528 for a free first read, or reserve a survey at /#booking. Bigger panel work can start from /services/panel-upgrades while smaller backup additions are often done in a single visit.

  • Free WhatsApp load-list review — 9801508528
  • Inverter/UPS wiring, changeover, surge, labelling
  • Itemised NPR quote before chargeable work
  • Book at /#booking — Kathmandu Valley coverage
