What three phase motor wiring actually means in Nepal

Three phase motor wiring Nepal work starts with three live conductors — traditionally labelled R, Y and B — plus neutral and protective earth. A three-phase motor receives power on all three legs at once, which is why pumps, lifts, workshop lathes, compressors and industrial fans run smoother and draw less current for the same output. In Kathmandu, NEA supplies three-phase power to commercial premises and to homes with heavy loads such as a borewell pump, a home lift or a large air-conditioning bank.

A three-phase motor circuit needs a rated breaker, a starter that isolates and protects, an overload relay set to nameplate current, correctly sized cable, and a verified earth path. SDR Smart Design and Repair wires and repairs these circuits across Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur — call or WhatsApp 9801508528 before connecting any motor you are unsure about.

  • R, Y and B phase conductors — 120° apart in phase angle
  • Neutral for control circuits and unbalanced loads
  • Protective earth bonded to the motor frame
  • Cable sized to full-load current and run length

Phase sequence, rotation and terminal links

Before a three-phase motor spins the right way, the phase sequence must be correct. Swap any two of R, Y and B and the magnetic field reverses, turning the shaft the opposite direction. That is harmless in an open-air fan test, but destructive on a conveyor, lift or workshop machine with a fixed direction. Installers check rotation with a phase rotation meter or a brief bump test.

Inside the terminal box, most low-voltage motors ship with links for either star (Y) or delta (Δ). Star short-links the top row so windings see reduced voltage at start; delta links the six terminals so each winding sees full line voltage. A 415V motor in Nepal almost always runs delta in normal operation, with star used only inside a star-delta starter during start. Wrong links can lock the rotor and burn windings.

  • Check phase sequence before first full-speed run
  • Two phases swapped = reverse rotation
  • Star links: three links shorting the top terminal row
  • Delta links: six-terminal ring pattern per the motor plate
  • Never power a motor with unknown link configuration

DOL vs star-delta vs VFD starters

Direct-on-line (DOL) starters apply full voltage the moment you press the button — a contactor, an overload relay and start/stop buttons, or a manual motor starter on smaller plant. They suit motors up to roughly 4–7.5 kW where inrush will not shock the supply. Many Kathmandu terrace tanks, workshop machines and extraction fans run on DOL daily.

Star-delta starters reduce inrush by energising in star first, then switching to delta once the rotor is up to speed. Larger pumps, compressors and lift motors use this method, or a soft starter / VFD, because direct inrush can dip lights across the building. VFDs also control speed — useful on pumps that only needed half flow. Tell SDR the motor kW, application and run length for a starter recommendation.

  • DOL: simplest and lowest cost, suits smaller motors
  • Star-delta: lower inrush for medium and large motors
  • Soft starter / VFD: smooth ramp plus speed control
  • Overload relay required on every starter type
  • Local isolator within sight of the motor where practicable

Overload, short-circuit and earth-fault protection

A three-phase motor needs two protection layers working together. Short-circuit protection — an MCB, MCCB or fuse — reacts to catastrophic faults in milliseconds. Overload protection — the thermal or electronic relay inside the starter — reacts more slowly to real-world problems: a jammed impeller, a blocked conveyor, dust-seized bearings, or the motor running on two phases after a loose terminal.

Set the overload relay close to the motor nameplate full-load current (FLC), not vaguely mid-range. Too high, it will not trip before the winding overheats; too low, it nuisance-trips on every hot Kathmandu afternoon. A 30mA RCCB on the circuit protects people, while the equipment earth path carries fault current to trip the upstream breaker. Our team verifies all three layers during /services/safety-inspections and motor call-outs.

  • MCCB or MCB sized to cable and prospective fault current
  • Overload relay set to motor nameplate FLC
  • 30mA RCCB for personnel protection on accessible circuits
  • Earth continuity from motor frame back to the main earth bar

Cable sizing and practical wiring tips for Kathmandu sites

Cable is sized from motor full-load current, ambient temperature and run length. In Kathmandu summers, a pump room above the roof slab can push ratings down enough that the "obvious" catalogue size is wrong. Voltage drop also matters: a long terrace run with undersized cable means low voltage, hot windings and early failure — even when the breaker never trips.

Gland every cable entering a metal enclosure, ferrule every stranded conductor, torque terminals to the manufacturer figure, and label both ends. Separate motor power from control wiring so contactor noise does not scramble float switches. Never run a three-phase motor from an improvised extension board during testing.

  • Size cable for FLC, ambient temperature and run length
  • Check voltage drop on long terrace runs
  • Gland, ferrule, torque and label every termination
  • Keep power and control cables in separate routes
