Lightning Protection for Homes in Nepal: 2026 Guide

Lightning protection for homes in Nepal: earthing, lightning arrestors and surge protectors cost in Kathmandu. Monsoon safety guide NPR 2026 from SDR Smart Design and Repair — 9801508528.

Lightning protection home Nepal — lightning over Kathmandu houses during monsoon storm

How lightning damages Kathmandu homes

Monsoon lightning reaches the valley three ways: a direct strike to the roof or service drop, a strike nearby that induces voltage along overhead NEA lines, and ground potential rise that travels back through your earth rod into appliance neutrals. Most Kathmandu appliance deaths in a storm are the second kind — the bolt lands hundreds of metres away, a few kilovolts ride the feeder into the neighbourhood, and every TV, fridge and router that was left plugged in absorbs part of it before the MCB even notices (because a surge is too fast for a standard MCB to see).

A house with a metal water pipe bonded to earth and a real earth rod survives better than one with no earthing at all — but even good earthing cannot stop the surge travelling in on the service cable. Protection is layered: intercept the strike with a lightning arrestor, give it a low-resistance path to earth, and clamp the residual surge at the board with a surge protective device (SPD) before it reaches your sockets. SDR Smart Design and Repair designs and installs all three layers across Kathmandu — call 9801508528 before the next storm front.

  • Direct strike: roof, antenna, metal water tank or service drop
  • Induced surge: via NEA overhead lines from a nearby strike
  • Ground rise: voltage feedback through poor or missing earth
  • Antenna/solar mounts: the most common accidental air terminals
  • Appliances left plugged in: die first in every storm

Lightning protection components and costs (NPR)

A basic home system has three priced parts. A lightning arrestor — air terminal, down conductor and roof mounting — costs Rs 3,000–10,000 depending on height and brand. A proper earthing pit with rod, charcoal-salt or chemical fill, and connection cable runs Rs 4,000–12,000; enhanced chemical earthing for low-resistance sites is at the top of that band. A Type 2 surge protective device for the distribution board is Rs 4,000–12,000 supplied and fitted, with Type 1+2 combo units for exposed sites costing more.

Add surge-protected power strips (Rs 800–2,500 each) at the TV and router as a final clamp, and a whole-house SPD fitted at the incoming side of the board so every circuit benefits. Total budget for a modest Kathmandu house — arrestor, one earthing pit and board SPD — lands around Rs 15,000–35,000 all-in with SDR labour and testing, which is less than a single TV and fridge PCB pair after a storm.

  • Lightning arrestor (air terminal + down conductor): Rs 3,000–10,000
  • Earthing pit and rod installation: Rs 4,000–12,000
  • Board surge protector (Type 2 SPD, fitted): Rs 4,000–12,000
  • Surge-protected power strips: Rs 800–2,500 each
  • Typical home package, installed: Rs 15,000–35,000

Earthing: the foundation everything else depends on

A lightning arrestor with bad earth is a decorative spike. The down conductor must reach a pit whose resistance is low enough to dump kiloamps into the ground without lifting the roof potential. In Kathmandu’s soil — variable, often rocky, dry for months before the monsoon — a standard pipe-and-plate earthing target of under 10 ohms is realistic if the pit is built properly and watered/conditioned; chemical earthing rods hold better through the dry season at Rs 8,000–12,000 installed.

Bond the earthing to the distribution board earth bar, the metal water tank and any metal window frames you want to equalise — one common earth, not three unrelated rods. Test earth resistance after installation and again pre-monsoon; SDR measures and documents the reading on the handover slip. If your house has no earth rod at all, this is the upgrade to do first, ahead of any SPD purchase.

  • Target earth resistance: under 10 ohms (document after test)
  • One bonded earth system: board, water tank, arrestor
  • Chemical earthing rod for dry-season reliability
  • Pre-monsoon resistance check every year
  • Board earth bar visibly connected and labelled

Storm-day habits that protect your electronics

Hardware buys you safety only if the habits follow. When a storm cell is close — sky darkening, first thunder — unplug the TV, router, fridge (if the storm will be long) and any rooftop-connected equipment like an antenna or solar inverter DC input. Plugged in but powered off is NOT enough: a surge does not care about the power button, only the copper in the wall. Unplug at the socket, then isolate at the MCB if you will be out.

Avoid showers if you have metal plumbing bonded with poor earth, and stay away from windows facing the open valley. After the storm, wait five minutes before restoring loads, sniff the board, then switch circuits back on one at a time — a device already damaged by surge will announce itself with smell or sparks rather than exploding later in the night.

  • First thunder: unplug TV, router, antenna-linked gear
  • Power-off is not enough — pull the plug from the socket
  • Isolate the main MCB if leaving the house during a storm
  • Post-storm: sniff board, restore circuits one at a time
  • Keep SPD surge strips on the most valuable electronics

Book lightning protection with SDR

Lightning protection is not a weekend guess — down-conductor routing, pit location away from foot traffic and water tanks, bonding at the board and correct SPD placement all decide whether the system works or merely looks impressive on the roof. SDR Smart Design and Repair installs arrestors, builds and tests earthing pits, fits SPDs and produces a written report with resistance readings for your records.

Pre-monsoon is the right time to book — Kathmandu demand spikes the day the first big storm hits. Call or WhatsApp 9801508528 for an inspection and fixed NPR quote, or reserve at /#booking. • Book before monsoon — installs get busy after first storms
  • Inspection covers roof mounts, earth rod and board SPD
  • Written NPR quote and resistance test report included
